6th in the State! Bourbon County’s KMEA Triumph Sets Stage for National Title Hunt

What a phenomenal weekend for the Bourbon County Marching Band at the Kentucky State Marching Band Championships!

The Colonels finished their KMEA journey as the 6th best band in the state in Class AAAA, a monumental achievement that capped off months of dedication. After securing a Top 6 spot in the Semi-finals at Daviess County High School with a Distinguished Rating and a score of 85.950, the band delivered a powerful final performance at 8:15 PM CDT at the iconic Houchens Industries L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, KY, located on the Western Kentucky University (WKU) campus.

This hard-won 6th place ranking (with a final score of 85.350) and the accompanying Distinguished Rating in the Finals is a massive achievement, showcasing the precision, talent, and teamwork of the entire ensemble. Now, the focus shifts entirely to the national stage!

Next Stop: Bands of America Grand Nationals

The pursuit of excellence continues as the Bourbon County Marching Band now shifts focus to the national stage: the Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championships, where they will compete for the national title as a Class A band!

This difference in classification often requires a quick explanation: the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) assigns classes (like our Class AAAA) based on total school enrollment size. Bands of America, conversely, classifies bands (like our Class A) based on the size of the competitive marching program itself (number of performing members), allowing us to compete fairly against similar-sized ensembles nationwide.

This program is no stranger to the national spotlight, having built an incredible tradition of excellence at BOA Grand Nationals :

  • Grand National Class A Champions (6 times): 2008, 2009, 2010, 2017, 2019, 2023
  • Grand National Class A Runner-Up (2nd Place): 2024
  • Grand National Class A Third Place: 2015, 2016, 2021, 2022
  • Grand National Class AA Third Place: 2011
