Senior Spotlight – Thursday

Kar Rasmussen

Drum Major

For this Drum Major, being a Marching Colonel is synonymous with Family and love. Having been in various band programs over the years, she states that she is blessed to be a part of something that she can call a family, which offers a supportive home base when anything else fails. She emphasizes that the story of how our show Motif was created is her favorite part of the season, as it perfectly reflects the program’s journey and deep community feeling.

Stepping into the Drum Major role this year taught one of the most vital, and difficult, lessons: It’s okay for not everyone to like and or respect you. She realized that a good leader must prioritize her job over seeking universal approval, a profound realization that helped her stay true to herself and changing to better for herself and the band—the accomplishment she is most proud of this year. This growth in leadership and personal example will be crucial in her future, helping her set positive leadership examples.

The senior shared a truly moving message of gratitude, thanking the staff and band for the many opportunities to grow and learn about herself. She offered deep appreciation for the supportive Band Moms and Dads, her mother for being her number one supporter, and her father figure, Bryon, for showing up for the activity.

Looking ahead, this senior plans to become a psychotherapist and take over her mom’s practice one day. Her best advice to younger members is to pick something you love to do and to be patient and kind to themselves, ensuring they fully experience the joy of the band family.
