In the world of the marching arts, four years can feel like an eternity. For the students and supporters of Bourbon County, the silence of the winter guard season had been a long-standing void—until 2026. This year, the Bourbon County Winter Guard didn’t just return to the floor; they reclaimed it, proving that while they may have been away, their spirit for excellence never wavered.
With a truncated season consisting of only two high-stakes competitions, the stakes were high and the margin for error was non-existent. However, Bourbon County turned those two opportunities into a masterclass in performance and precision.
The Breakthrough at Lafayette
The journey began at the Lafayette Winterguard Showcase, held at Lafayette High School. Competing in the Scholastic Regional A2 category, the Bourbon County performers delivered a performance that caught both the judges and the audience by surprise.
In a field of established programs, Bourbon County’s technical execution and emotional depth earned them 1st Place. The victory was so decisive that the circuit officials issued an immediate promotion to Scholastic Regional A, a move reserved for groups whose skill level clearly exceeds their current classification. It was the ultimate “welcome back” gesture for a program that had been dormant since 2022.

Moving up a classification mid-season is a daunting task for any group, let alone one in its first year back. The challenge was set for the Tates Creek Winter Guard Competition, which was hosted at Bryan Station High School.
Competing for the first time in the more rigorous Scholastic Regional A class, Bourbon County faced stiffer competition and higher judging criteria. They met the challenge head-on. With a performance that combined athletic choreography with seamless equipment work, they once again ascended to the top of the podium, taking 1st Place for the second consecutive time.

The 2026 season was more than just a collection of trophies for Bourbon County; it was a statement of intent. The four-year hiatus had not diminished the “Bourbon Brand” of performance.
“While this was the first year in four years for the winter guard to return to Bourbon County, it did so with a resounding ‘we belong here and this is our stage,'” remarked one observer following the Bryan Station performance.
The success of the 2026 team serves as a foundation for the future of the marching arts in Bourbon County. By securing two 1st place finishes and a class promotion in just two appearances, these students have ensured that the lights will stay on for the winter guard for years to come.
Bourbon County has officially returned, and if this season is any indication, they are just getting started.
